Nose pads and their importance

Nose pads are among the key features of your glasses. Placed near the nose bridge, these two tiny supports ensure your glasses stay in the right spot. Not only do nose pads prevent your glasses from slipping off your face, but they also ensure a comfortable wearing experience.

Essentially, nose pads are categorised into two different types: fixed and adjustable.

Fixed nose pads are stationary, meaning they are fixed in one place.

Adjustable nose pads can be adjusted based on the glasses’ fit.

Different nose pad based on materials

Nose pads are made of different materials and should be cleaned regularly for hygienic wear. They can be further categorised into the following types:

  1. Silicone-based: Most common in glasses, these provide you with a comfortable fit and less likely to slip.
  2. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based: Available in both soft and hard versions, these nose pads provide a comfortable and easy-wearing experience.
  3. Polycarbonate-based: These nose pads are crafted from hard polycarbonate-based material and are very durable and lightweight.

Important tools you’ll need

Here’s a list of tools you will need to adjust your glasses’ nose pads:

  • Nose pad pliers - help establish the grip over your nose pads for precise positioning.
  • A small screwdriver - this tool can come handy in case your glasses have screw-in nose pads and you want to clean or change them.
  • A microfiber cloth - helps clean the lenses and nose pads.

Please note that you can either purchase a glasses kit that has these tools or purchase them individually.

5-step guide to adjust glasses nose pads easily

Follow the below-mentioned steps to position your nose pads:

Step 1: Wash your hands with soap and water

Always hold your glasses with clean and dry hands.

Step 2: Use your glasses’ bridge to hold them

Never hold your glasses by the lenses whilst adjusting the nose pads; hold them from their bridge.

Step 3: Use hands or nose pad pliers for adjustments

You can use your fingers for quick and minor adjustments. To do this, just gently grab the nose pad with your thumb and index finger to adjust it until it feels comfortable. However, it’s always better to use nose pad pliers as they are less risky and provide precise positioning.

Quick tips:

  • If your glasses feel like they’re pinching, push the nose pads apart until they feel comfortable on your nose.
  • If your glasses are sitting too low, bring the nose pads closer until they sit comfortably on your nose. Ensure you’re only slightly adjusting one nose pad at a time.

Step 4: Make sure that the nose pads are evenly adjusted

It is important that you adjust your nose pads evenly. Otherwise, your glasses will not sit well on your face. Check the adjustment symmetry by placing the glasses at your eye level.

Step 5: Keep trying on your glasses after each adjustment

Keep trying your glasses on in front of the mirror every time you make an adjustment to see if the fit is ok. Additionally, ensure that the nose pads are lying flat on your nose and aren’t digging in.

Additional tips for maintenance:

  • If you notice that your glasses’ nose pads have turned dirty or yellowish in colour, this is a sign that you may have to change or clean them. Furthermore, don’t forget to change your nose pads every few months.
  • To clean your glasses’ nose pads, prepare a mixture of lukewarm water and mild dish soap. Now, dip a Q-tip into the solution and gently clean your eyeglasses’ nose pads.
  • Lastly, use a clean microfiber cloth to dry the nose pads.

Common mistakes to avoid

Here’s a list of a few common mistakes that you should avoid while adjusting your glasses’ nose pads:

  • Touching your glasses with dirty hands
  • Handling the glasses roughly whilst making the adjustments
  • Not wearing glasses after every single adjustment to double-check
  • Not ensuring that the adjustments are even
  • Ignoring the slipping or discomfort caused by your glasses

Tackling common post-adjustment issues
