What’s the difference between silicone hydrogel contact lenses and hydrogel lenses?

Both hydrogel lenses and silicone hydrogel lenses are soft contact lenses made of plastic. This lens material is highly absorbent, making them hard when they are dry and soft when they are hydrated. Silicone hydrogel, compared to hydrogel lenses, allow much more oxygen to pass through the lens to reach the eye. This makes them more comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

What are some good contacts for dry eyes?

Silicone hydrogel contact lenses retain more moisture than traditional hydrogel lenses, due to their high oxygen transmissibility. This allows up to six times more oxygen (depending on the brand of lens) to pass through the lens to reach the cornea of the eye. This makes silicone hydrogel contact lenses a more attractive option for individuals who suffer from dry eyes, irritation and allergies.

The enriching moisture technology used in silicone hydrogel material ensures comfort for a healthy lens wearing experience.

What are the benefits of wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses?

People tend to be able to wear silicone hydrogel contact lenses for longer than the standard hydrogel equivalent. This is due to more oxygen passing through to the eye. As well as increased comfort during wear, the larger supply of oxygen also dramatically reduces your risk of getting hypoxia. Hypoxia is a condition that deprives the eyes of adequate oxygen supply.

Are silicone hydrogel contact lenses suitable for my eyes?

Almost everyone can wear silicone hydrogel contact lenses. This is because they can correct short-sightedness or long-sightedness. They are also available as toric lenses to correct astigmatism and multifocal lenses to correct presbyopia.
At Feel Good Contacts, we recommend speaking with your optician before trying any new lenses. Silicone hydrogel is an advanced and highly breathable material, however, these lenses may not be compatible for every contact lens wearer. Visit your eye doctor to find out which lenses will be most suitable for your eyes.

Which silicone hydrogel contact lenses should I buy?

Our best-selling silicone hydrogel monthly contact lenses include:

We also stock a premium range of silicone hydrogel dailies contact lenses which include:

Our range includes Acuvue Oasys and Acuvue 2, designed for two weekly disposable use or extended wear. The silicone hydrogel material is highly breathable as it permits a large amount of oxygen to the eyes. This allows your eyes to breathe and retain moisture throughout your lens wearing time.

At Feel Good Contacts, we strongly recommend seeking approval from your optician before sleeping in your lenses. This is important because it will ensure the lenses are suitable for you.

Are silicone hydrogel contact lenses more expensive?

The level of comfort that silicone hydrogel lenses provides means that it is a premium material which generally costs more, however, our aim at Feel Good Contacts is to offer you branded contact lenses at unbeatable prices. We promise the cheapest prices on the market. Our Price Match Guarantee ensures that you won’t find your lenses cheaper anywhere else in Ireland. Should you find the same lenses cheaper elsewhere, we will be happy to refund the difference.

How long can I wear silicone hydrogel contact lenses for?

How long you can wear your contact lenses for will vary depending on the type of lens and the sensitivity of your eyes. Typically, you can wear silicone hydrogel contact lenses for 14 - 16 hours. You may be able to wear them for less time if your eyes are particularly dry or sensitive. Silicone hydrogel contacts are available as daily disposables, monthlies and two weekly lenses.

If you are wearing two weekly or monthly contact lenses, ensure you maintain a simple cleaning routine at night to avoid eye infections. If at any point your eyes start to feel very irritated or dry, do not continue wearing your contact lenses. You should seek advice from your eye doctor.
